Director Zack Snyder is back, this time with Dave Bautista in the new action-horror movie from Netflix, Army of The Dead. Now, playing in a universe totally separate from that of his DC “Snyderverse,” the famously stylized Snyder has free rein to cinematically take us wherever he wants to go. However, Army of The Dead often feels like far too familiar a journey.
After a military convoy from Area 51 crashes, their secret cargo is set loose in Las Vegas: a fast, strong, intelligent zombie. No one is safe, and the city is soon overrun and zombified. Vegas is walled off, and its rumored that the President wants to nuke the place. Some time later, Scott Ward (Dave Bautista), a decorated hero Vegas’ evacuation, finds himself as a broke, lowly burger flipper. He is approached by mysterious businessman Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada), who gives him a proposition: sneak into the city, get to his old casino, break $200 million out of the vault, and you get to keep $50 million of it. Ward is wary of Tanaka, but accepts the deal. He quickly rounds up a team, including: the tough, professional Maria (Ana de la Reguera); the cool, chainsaw-wielding Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick); the wild, zombie-killing influencer Guzman (Raúl Castillo); and the comic relief safebreaker Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer). While inside Vegas, however, it becomes clear that the deeper you go, the zombies get smarter and tougher. Plus, that nuke will be coming much sooner than anyone thought…
Army of The Dead, as the name implies, has a lot of zombies. It absolutely delivers on the all-important variety of kills, and showcases some really detailed and creative gore effects. In fact, sometimes the amount of gore felt like a welcome throwback to the violently carefree zombie movies of yore like Braindead.
However, there is very little visual flair to distinguish it from every other zombie flick out there, which is unusual for a Snyder film. Although Snyder does include a fantastic montage during the opening credits to set the mood, then he plays it safe the rest of the way. There’s not even a lot of his trademark ultra-smooth slow motion. A lot of the movie just comes down to standard medium shots of people pointing guns offscreen and shooting.
You can love a Snyder film or hate it, but you don’t forget moments a Snyder film. Unfortunately for Army of The Dead, it might be the first Snyder film you will forget.
