Alicia Keys visited the stage at the famed Apollo Theater for a one-night-only concert on Thursday night (November 11), and Harlem was in for a treat. The 15-time Grammy Award winner put on a spectacular show as part of SiriusXM and Pandora’s Small Stage Series, bringing fans on a tour of her extensive discography.

Keys and an army of performers stormed the stage at 8:45 p.m. The dancers were dressed in tuxedos and gold feathery attire, just like the celebrity. Keys, dressed in a black, blue, and gold gown, enthralled the audience with a dramatic performance of “Empire State of Mind.”

 Keys upped the pace by bringing out famed rap pair Jadakiss and Style P for a jazzy version of “We Gon Make It,” mesmerized by the crowd’s excitement. The Ruff Ryders duo arrived in style, wearing sunglasses and jackets, with Keys on the piano. “We’re going to transport tonight,” Keys vowed. “I’d like for you to be free.”

Keys accelerated the tempo by returning to her 2016 smash “In Common” later in the set. Keys and her live band delighted in the crowd’s excitement as she skated her way through the tropical tune, encouraging fans to rise up and dance. The R&B diva, who is also set to release her new album, Keys, on December 10, gave fans a taste of what’s to come. The double album will have both new original music and “unlocked” versions of previously released tracks. She sang piano-laden renditions of “Skydive,” “Is It Insane,” and “Only You” to get the fans warmed up. 

Alicia Keys jumped off the keyboard and onto her MPC after each performance, where she flipped the production and added some hip-hop flavor for her ‘unlocked’ renditions. Keys resumed her humanitarian efforts by playing “Come For Me,” a new song she co-wrote with emerging R&B star Lucky Daye. Daye also played his new song “Over,” which he revealed was his first time performing at the Apollo.

While Keys loved hearing new songs, she also enjoyed reminiscing about old favorites like “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart,” “Girl On Fire,” and “No One.” The most unforgettable incident occurred during her performance of “Fallin’,” when two of her dancers scaled the theater curtains and demonstrated their aerial skills at the song’s crescendo.

Keys invited her youngest son Egypt to join her onstage for a performance of “If I Ain’t Got You” before wrapping up the show. Keys raced through the nostalgic classic with remarkable ease, leaving the crowd beyond happy with her 90-minute performance, which she dedicated to him and his brother, Genesis.

Before leaving the stage, she exclaimed, “There’s no place like home.” It comes as a shock to learn that Keys has ever felt insecure or unworthy. Her music pulsates with power and emancipation messages. Keys was unhappy, questioning her instincts and concerned about maintaining her success. Worse, she allowed others to prey on her fears in order to make her task more difficult. “I no longer belonged to myself” by 2006, she writes in her memoir. “Every request, every demand, every flash of anxiety that came with even the possibility of saying no had enslaved me.” She scheduled a solo trip to Egypt after falling down in her dressing room one night in New York.

Just about every single week we are flabbergasted by singer/songwriter Jaguar Wright’s accounts of secrets in the music industry.  Recently, Jaguar has divulged alleged information on Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, and the likes of so many other famous musical artists. What’s so appealing is that many viewers are attempting to decipher if any of this information is accurate.  As listeners, we cannot dismiss the passion and drive that Jaguar exhibits during these outbursts.  An aspect that is intriguing about her antics is the format in which she chooses to display her outbursts; either on YouTube or Instagram live.  Why is she not meeting with an interviewer like Charlamagne Tha God or Tamron Hall to do a detailed interview?  Many of us understand that she wants to portray all this juicy information her way… yes, we get it… raw and unfiltered; but has she thought about how it may be perceived to others?   Her rants at times can be perceived as bitter and infuriated, which honestly may be the direction she wants to convey.  While some listeners oppose the brash ways of her delivery; others have applauded her for being bold and doing it her way.

So, is there some truth to her antics? I don’t know!   Recently, we’ve only heard about one celebrity that has threatened to pursue legal action against her; this was the 90’s R&B singer Tevin Campbell.  All the other heavy hitters like Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, and Jill Scott have refused to speak or barely acknowledge her antics.  Whatever the case may be, many are implying is she right or wrong?  Countless listeners float between her being right and wrong.  So, if all these allegations did occur; we are owed the knowledge of this information as fans.   Where others are teetering the line is when things may get too personal; such as someone’s sexual preference or activities that are alleged which may not be true. Who knows!  What we do know is that maybe there is no right or wrong answer.  Thus, as Jaguar continues her weekly rants, you be the judge… Is Jaguar Wright or Wrong?
