MODOK (Mental/Mobile/Mechanized Organism Designed only for Killing), a big-headed supervillian and CEO of weapons company AIM, is obsessed with defeating any Avenger that he can get his hands on, but preferably Iron Man (Jon Hamm). While MODOK views Iron Man as his archnemesis, the feeling is clearly not mutual. MODOK knows this deep down, but can’t stand the thought of somebody daring to not be intimidated by his villainy. Unfortunately, AIM is not in a great financial spot due to devoting its resources to the CEO’s Evil Plots of questionable success. Facing the loss of everything, MODOK reluctantly sells the company to the mysterious GRMBL Corporation, and now has to deal with their sickeningly hipster overseer Austin (Beck Bennett), who has no interest in MODOK’s ideas (or dignity). On the home front, MODOK’s marriage has become another casualty of his murderous obsessions. His wife Jodie (Aimee Garcia) kicks him out of the house and into a crappy apartment, making it that much harder to be a good dad to his kids, the angsty Melissa (Melissa Fumero) and the hormonally charged Lou (Ben Shwartz).

In the tradition of other adult animated comedies like Bojack Horseman and Rick and Morty, Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is about a man who tries desperately to cling to what makes him special, despite how often it conflicts with… well, everything. And the only thing he can think of is to lash out, sometimes with laser blasts.

Made with action figure stop-motion animation à la Robot Chicken (whose team also produced this), M.O.D.O.K. is a treat to watch, and the technique really makes the goofy situations and sudden violence work. It is much easier to take a boss with a giant head blowing an unlucky employee’s arm off if it sort of looks like a kid playing with toys.

Despite the huge stylistic and tonal change from the MCU, Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is able to tell a twistedly touching story about a supervillian who realizes that he isn’t so super anymore. And maybe he never was.

The horror movie Saint Maud tells the story of Maud (Morfydd Clark), a young hospice nurse with a newly discovered religious zeal. Not the type of religious zeal that makes somebody stand on a street corner and preach about Armageddon, but a deeply personal desire to cleanse yourself of sin and follow God’s path evermore. What “sin” Maud’s was, we are not initially told. All we know is that whatever it was, it was enough to make Maud abruptly leave her job at a hospital, join a hospice service, and act like a nun from the 12th century. Her hair is dry and always kept back in a ponytail, her clothes seem conservative (even for a nurse’s uniform), and she barely brings her voice above a whisper. Sometimes she even whips herself.

Maud is assigned to care for Amanda Köhl (Jennifer Ehle), a “minor celebrity” in the dance community, now in the final stages of a terminal illness. Confined to a wheelchair and stuck in her dark old mansion atop a hill, Amanda has become a difficult patient for nurses to deal with. Maud remarks (to God) that she has never cared for “self-centered creatives,” and Amanda thinks that Maud is naive, but both begin to form a bond as the days go by. Amanda, touched by Maud’s genuine compassion, begins to call the young nurse “my little Savior” and even agrees to pray with her. Maud thanks God for this breakthrough, and begins to experience almost orgasmic states of religious ecstasy in her delight. However, as Amanda’s friends and lovers begin to visit, their artsy, bohemian lifestyles seem to threaten Maud’s progress. Which is, of course, God’s progress…

This is a movie about a deeply troubled person who has turned to religion as a means of redemption, but a redemption that is not a cure; she may be God’s vessel (and she might be crazy), but she is still a human being in deep pain. Director Rose Glass never gives us a forced moment where Maud stares absently at a cross and then all is well. When Maud prays, we can see the gears in her head turning, her mind searching for connections between what she believes and what she knows.

The newest addition to the Hulu/Blumhouse monthly horror film series Into The Dark is the “sexy” monster flick Tentacles, starring Dana Drori as a lovesick wanderer with a strange past, and Casey Deidrick as the hunky photographer she settles down with.

Tentacles begins as Tara (Drori) wanders from open house to open house, looking for a place to slip away to grab some necessities or even a day’s rest. She is eventually found by Sam (Deidrick), a retail photographer whom Tara had just overheard having an argument with a woman, Esther (Kasey Elise). A lightbulb goes off in Tara’s head as she discovers that Eshter is merely his business partner/best friend… just friends. The pair start flirting, one thing leads to another, and Tara spends the night with Sam. The two hit it off so well, that after only a few weeks the pair decide to live together. However, Tara begins to act more and more paranoid out of the belief that she is being stalked by a vengeful ex-boyfriend (Evan Williams) and Sam develops a piercing earache that his doctor cannot explain. As Esther begins to question the motives of Tara, Sam must make a choice between listening to his best friend or his mysterious new lover.

Monsters with a sexual twist is a great element of the horror genre, having been used highly successfully in movies like It Follows, Teeth, and Alien. The mixing of those two powerful emotions, fear and desire, can create wonderfully creepy visuals and scenarios. Tentacles plays with the anxiety around not being able to see things through your partner’s eyes; to wish you could understand what they want.

Besides that, however, the “sex” aspect of the monster is a bit underused. There’s eerie moments with the titular slippery, phallic tentacles, but the monster has surprisingly little screen-time. When it is on screen, the monster just tries to strangle and gobble its victims like you’ve seen in a million other movies. The focus of the movie is on the characters, but things move too quickly to really get a sense of dread to share with Tara or Sam. Drori and Deidrick do give some decent “arguing couple” scenes, but these moments are often not reinforced with the patience that portraying an on-screen relationship would require. Tentacles is not a bad horror movie, but it does not have nearly enough fun with its subject matter as you would expect.

Primal opens with Nicolas Cage as hunter Frank Walsh, who has just nabbed a rare white jaguar in some South American jungle. Local villagers warn him that the “jag” is cursed, but with cigar in mouth and whiskey in hand, he berates the locals for their superstition and screams at a parrot eating his lunch (he “does not like people,” we are later told). Frank books passage on a cargo ship bound for America, keeping his new prize and several other dangerous animals below deck.

At this point, I was more than ready for a simple story of some wild animals getting loose on a ship and picking off the crew one by one. Nicolas Cage fighting off critters is the type of fodder the internet lives for (i.e. 2006’s The Wicker Man). Unfortunately, the script felt the need to complicate things by introducing captured mercenary Loffler (Kevin Durand), along with several buff U.S. Marshalls and a Navy doctor (Famke Janssen) who must escort Loffler to face justice.

Of course, Loffler escapes and frees the animals to wreak havoc so he can plan more mischief. You’d think a loose killer and a boatload of wild animals would be ripe for some imaginative kills. However, the movie becomes more concerned with guns than with teeth. Aside from one amusing attack by a family of monkeys, the animals rarely affect the characters directly, becoming little more than an inconvenience for much of the movie.

The film ends up relying on standard action movie imagery of dudes creeping around with guns at the ready, but most of the time they are framed in medium-shot, making it seem like there is plenty of room to breathe. To make things worse, much of the action takes place under a visibly high ceiling in the ship’s sparsely stocked cargo hold.

The characters may feel trapped, but we are not there with them. Alien this is not. Nicolas Cage is capable of making almost any film he is in memorable, due to his routinely fascinating and bizarre performances. Who better to upstage wild animals than Cage? Primal, however, never realizes what juicy material it could have for him to work with and falls back on a generic plot and bland imagery that you could find in almost any other action film.

Although Solar Opposites was the number 1 watched show on Hulu for a time, still too many people haven’t heard of it. Since we are all supposed to be quarantined, there is no excuse to not watch TV. When I heard that one of the co-creators of Rick and Morty was making another show, I was very excited. Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan’s absurd and crude humor has created not only joy and laughter in the home, but also landmark events in the real world (Anyone else remember the McDonald’s riots over Szechauan Sauce?). How could this show compare to such an iconic masterpiece?

The short answer is: not horribly. The Hulu original has the marks of many of the streaming service’s original content: a great team, good concept, but does not quite reach the lofty expectations. Having said that, I enjoyed watching the show. 

SOLAR OPPOSITES ATTRACT AUDIENCES

In short, the show centers around a “family” of aliens, living in middle America on a mission. They are waiting for their “baby,” called a Pupa, to take over the world. Korvo (Justin Roiland) and Terry (Thomas Middleditch) employ the tropes of father and wife, while their pseudo children, Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) and Jesse (Mary Mack), play out different approaches to interacting with the humans. The family struggles to not only get along with each other, but with their community as a whole: relatable content for us all. Unfortunately, many of the storylines for the main family are better described as zany than laugh-out-loud funny. You watch, appreciating the humor, but it lacks the constant zingers that we have come to know from Rick and Morty. The show luckily keeps a similar sensibility to its creators’ predecessor, keeping the charm, even without all the flare.

Where this show excels, the reason why the show is worth talking about, is from its side story. The troublesome Yumyulack has a shrink ray—you know, as aliens do—and shrinks humans to put in his wall. Quickly, the trapped humans create their own society, and we follow the captives trying to overthrow the dictatorship that has emerged. This storyline is so compelling, I wish it were the full show. The resistance is so well developed, you forget that you’re watching a comedy and, instead, become enveloped in an animated war piece. This is not to say that there isn’t humor during these divergents from the main family. But calling that plotline a comedy is like calling ice-cream a dessert, as opposed to the divine gift that it is. That is all I can say without spoiling too much.

Although it lacks some of the comedic firepower, one of the improvements from Rick and Morty is the heart that the characters have. While you empathize with Rick and Morty, you don’t get too upset when they face challenges, knowing that everything will be okay. The side plot of Solar Opposites keeps you guessing, and your attachment to the characters never dissipates. The family is one that we can all relate to, despite being from another planet. Hulu has already renewed the series for season 2. The show is also wonderful for the Easter eggs in the background. There is not a wasted inch on the screen. Hopefully, the show will continue to find its voice and build on the outstanding characters it has developed. It shows the solar similarities that we have more than the solar opposites. If you like zany animation, sci-fi, or an excuse to stare at a screen, this show is a worthwhile binge. HustleTV we love our Hulu shows
