Four Lions is a dark satire about religious extremism is Britain. The characters are all Muslim, and they plan to commit atrocities “for” Islam, but this is all more incidental than anything else. Director/Co-writer Chris Morris is less concerned with religion as a concept, as he is in the selfishness and stupidity of those who are willing abuse it in order to kill people.

We follow a radicalized, but otherwise mild-mannered family man named Omar (Riz Ahmed) and his dim-witted best friend Faisal (Adeel Akhtar) as they eagerly conspire to terrorize London. They are part of a struggling terrorist cell along with the childishly naive Hassan (Arsher Ali) and the bully/de facto leader Barry (Nigel Lindsay). Omar and Faisal are sent to the Middle East to legitimize their cell by training with insurgents in the field, but after a disastrous case of overconfidence involving a rocket, the two return home in disgrace. Determined to save face, Omar tells his other comrades that, yes, they were given the go-ahead to plan an attack, and should start right away. The group of Londoners then uses everything at its disposal, including “trained” ravens, obnoxious mascot costumes, and each other’s foolishness to send their clear, devastating message… so should they bomb a drug store or a mosque?

These guys are all fools, and we are never lead to believe anything else. However, there is a strange dignity that Morris gives through the framing of his characters, particularly Omar. The man is trying to blow up a bunch of innocent people, but we still get little moments of his family life, like playfully teasing his wife or attempting to frame his failures in the most heroic light possible as a bedtime story for his kid. He just wants to be worth something.

Four Lions is critical of a particular interpretation of Islam, never the religion itself. By focusing the humor directly onto Omar and his men (even the legitimate terrorists look like Navy Seals compared to them), Morris is able to provide an effective satire of an all-too-relevant issue while never being too cruel when choosing the butt of his jokes. Well worth the 97min runtime.

In the near future, a three-man expedition to Mars has been organized by the massive Hyperion corporation, commanded by the veteran astronaut Marina Barnett (Toni Collette) and crewed by David Kim (Daniel Dae Kim) and Zoe Levenson (Anna Kendrick). David and Zoe are first-time space explorers, selected by the company due to their outstanding research proposals on biology and medical science, respectively. All is well just after liftoff, and everyone settles into what will be their cramped home for the two year voyage, when suddenly an unconscious man (Shamier Anderson) falls from the ceiling. When the uninvited guest awakens, he identifies himself as Michael Adams, a member of the ground crew who somehow became stuck while working on the oxygen systems. The ship has no way to turn around, so the team must adjust to living with a fourth astronaut on a ship meant for three. While Michael quickly feels as though he is part of crew, complications arise as Commander Barnett realizes that the oxygen system Michael had been installing was damaged in his fall. Now, it seems that there will only be enough air for three people to keep breathing…

Anna Kendrick Meets Uninvited Astronaut in Stowaway Now Streaming

In the age of massive superhero blockbusters and multi-season prestige television, Stowaway is remarkable: there is no grand conspiracy, nobody has ulterior motives, and there is never a villain. Hyperion is an extremely negligent corporation to be sure, not even initially being able to locate employment records of Michael, but nobody broods about the company’s screwup, and no corporate stooge ever comes onscreen to give a disingenuous speech about sacrifice; as soon as the crew left Earth, they were the only ones who could impact each other in any meaningful way.

An almost totally performance driven sci-fi movie tough to pull off, but the cast is more than up to the challenge. Collette has more than proved her skill in portraying extremely stressed-out matriarchs in movies like The Sixth Sense and Hereditary (nobody can grimace like she can), and her experience translates well to commanding a spacecraft running out of air. Barnett’s fracturing coolness contrasts well with the quiet Daniel and plucky Zoe. Stuck in the middle of all of it is Michael, who is cautiously happy just to be there.

Stowaway pulls off exactly what the title implies: there’s simply one more person than there should be.

Safety stars Jay Reeves as Ray McElrathbey, a freshman at South Carolina’s Clemson University. Though he received a sports scholarship to join the renowned Clemson Tigers football team, Ray insists on taking as many classes as he can. Unfortunately, Ray immediately has difficulty juggling the demands of the Tiger’s brutal training regimen and the classwork of his difficult courses. Tragically, his mother (Amanda Warren) is sent to 30-day rehab after a relapse, leaving Ray’s much younger brother Fahmarr (Thaddeus J. Mixson) guardianless. Ray decides to take care of Fahmarr and hide him in the school dorms, but the extra responsibility only exasperates the student-athlete’s problems. Ray must decide if his school and career or his brother should take priority.

Safety Can’t Make Contact on Disney+ Streaming

Although all of the performers clearly had a lot of care for the story and give very earnest performances, there is a distance between what we are allowed to really see and what we are being visually told. The performances are sadly never supported by the framing, almost all dialogue exchange being shot in painfully conventional shot/reverse shots. Even during some of the emotional moments, there are very few close-ups where the sadness and stress of Ray can really come through. When Fahmarr has to stay with him, there is still little difference in how their scenes are shot compared to everyone else’s. We hear in the dialogue how difficult everything is, and we can imagine how much more frustrating Ray’s situation must be, but good looks at his reactions are few and far between.

There is a truly intimate moment we share with Ray early on as he sits in the locker room, weeping silently after realizing that he was not selected to be a starter. But even this heartbreak does not have as much weight as it could have; aside from a lot of practice scenes, we only ever get to see one game and feel that thrill of victory he desires for ourselves. The occasional action sequences are very well put together, but aside from Ray’s personal struggles, there isn’t much context to it all. The season has clearly been going on for some time, but we never even hear how the team is doing. After the movie ended, Disney+ suggested that I watch Remember the Titans, and I was reminded of how exciting and moving the studio’s other sports dramas can be.
