Few things on the planet can be more enjoyable and soothing than partaking in a Netflix movie viewing session. It can be particularly thrilling to watch a film that features one of the biggest stars out there. That star in this case happens to be famed actress Halle Berry. HustleTV fans won’t be able to turn away from “Bruised,” a movie that viewers can stream currently on Netflix. Bruised revolves around Berry’s character, a mixed martial arts fighter who has been suffering from significant reputation woes. She’s called Jackie Justice. Justice battles it out against a person who is a fresh face in the MMA scene. Her aim behind all of this is to reverse her questionable reputation and all of its negative effects. Beyond that, she also wishes to get her personal life back on track. She has been separated from her child for quite a while. Justice longs to become a capable and nurturing mom.

There are many things that make Bruised memorable. Berry is an actress who genuinely grasps the core of her character. She reveals that she relates to people who fight. It’s something that’s been in her nature since day one. She’s not the kind of person who gives up easily or at all. 

This film has undergone all sorts of adjustments since its beginning. The script initially centered around an Irish Catholic lady who was in her twenties. Since Bruised had to be updated, it enabled the actress to zero in on subjects that mattered to her. Berry has long had concerns that relate to abuse among family members. She has long had many opinions regarding parenting and lasting emotional pain as well. Berry is no way, shape or form a stranger to abuse. It was something that was a major component of her upbringing decades ago. Her father had a problem with alcohol dependence. Since he was addicted to alcohol, it sometimes made him lash out. He was sometimes harsh with his word selection. He sometimes even resorted to physical abuse. People who want authentic glimpses into abuse and all of the things that it can trigger may wish to watch Bruised.

Berry isn’t the sole talent behind Bruised. The movie was written by Michelle Rosenfarb. It features a host of capable and seasoned actors and actresses, too. So many capable individuals contribute to this in-depth tale and its message. Sheila Atim and Adan Canto are just a couple of major examples. They both help highlight the journey behind the film. Bruised demonstrates how complex it can be for human beings to conquer the darkest thoughts that lurk inside of their minds. It also demonstrates the adoration that a mother has for her son.

Entertainment aficionados who appreciate films that are simultaneously honest and poignant should go above and beyond to watch Bruised on Netflix right away. Although it’s not the lightest film in any sense, it motivates viewers to ponder their existences and their day-to-day choices.

The Tomorrow War had the difficult task of being an apocalyptic sci-fi horror/war film, but also providing enough good-natured thrills suitable for a Chris Pratt blockbuster. For the first third, Tomorrow War absolutely does. The anxiety surrounding the doomed conscripts is palpable (Command doesn’t even bother to give them uniforms), and the bond developed between Forrester and the comic relief character Charlie (Sam Richardson) feels like a natural, necessary reaction to pair’s impossible mission. Once in the battlefield of the future, Pratt brings an unexpected compassion to his ex-special forces hero, taking charge and doing his best to keep his untrained unit calm, together, and alive.

It is after this point, however, that the movie abandons its interest in the social and logistical details of its exciting concept and continues on like every other action movie out there: Forrester is recruited for a special assignment, the higher ups give a speech about how important it is, Forrester wants to do it his way but is told no, he does it anyway, etc. This process basically happens twice, with the last instance feeling incredibly tacked on.

While The Tomorrow War does try to use Pratt’s natural fatherly warmth to give the film a unique perspective, it simply does not put in the effort to narratively support it.

A review of Disney+’s Raya and the Last Dragon has been difficult to write. Not because there is so much wrong or right with it that I just can’t figure out where to begin, but because it is a decent movie. And that is sorta where my thoughts always end.

Raya and the Last Dragon is set long ago in the mythical land of Kumandra, where humans lived in peace and harmony with magical dragons of all types: water dragons, air dragons, etc. With the graceful and wise dragons as their guardians, the humans did not fear each other and had no need for war, or even borders. That is, until the evil sprits known as the Druun invaded and began to turn everyone, human and dragon alike, into stone. The dragons sacrificed themselves to defeat the Druun, and gave their essence to mankind in the form of a glowing orb to keep the demons gone forever. However, centuries later, human greed broke up the orb into four pieces, inadvertently unleashing the Druun on the world once again.

The titular Raya (Kelly Marie Tran) is a princess of one of humanity’s tribes, who travels the world on her giant rolling beast Tuk Tuk (Alan Tudyk). She is determined to recollect the orb’s pieces and save her father, Chief Benja (Daniel Dae Kim), from his petrification. On her journeys across Kumandra, Raya manages to resurrect a dragon of legend named Sisu (Awkwafina), who isn’t exactly as powerful as the stories about her said. All the while, our hero is being hunted by her fearsome nemesis Namaari (Gemma Chan) who wants the orb’s power for her own tribe’s benefit.

All of this information is given to us in the first act, and I did not even mention the lengthy sequence where Namaari and Raya’s backstories are explored. That is biggest issue that the movie has: pacing. There are fun characters with lively performances from their respective talents (Awkwafina is a definite highlight), but I never felt like the movie gave enough time to enjoy them. Some other adventurers that Raya later recruits, like Benedict Wong’s warrior Tong, end up feeling like they were simply tacked on.

Raya and the Last Dragon has breathtaking scenery, fun action, and great performances, but due to pacing issues these elements do not add up to a truly memorable experience. But it is a decent one.

Set in a universe apart from the PG-13 MCU, M.O.D.O.K. is able to push the envelope for Disney’s property in terms of vulgarity, violence, and style.

MODOK (Mental/Mobile/Mechanized Organism Designed only for Killing), a big-headed supervillian and CEO of weapons company AIM, is obsessed with defeating any Avenger that he can get his hands on, but preferably Iron Man (Jon Hamm). While MODOK views Iron Man as his archnemesis, the feeling is clearly not mutual. MODOK knows this deep down, but can’t stand the thought of somebody daring to not be intimidated by his villainy. Unfortunately, AIM is not in a great financial spot due to devoting its resources to the CEO’s Evil Plots of questionable success. Facing the loss of everything, MODOK reluctantly sells the company to the mysterious GRMBL Corporation, and now has to deal with their sickeningly hipster overseer Austin (Beck Bennett), who has no interest in MODOK’s ideas (or dignity). On the home front, MODOK’s marriage has become another casualty of his murderous obsessions. His wife Jodie (Aimee Garcia) kicks him out of the house and into a crappy apartment, making it that much harder to be a good dad to his kids, the angsty Melissa (Melissa Fumero) and the hormonally charged Lou (Ben Shwartz).

In the tradition of other adult animated comedies like Bojack Horseman and Rick and Morty, Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is about a man who tries desperately to cling to what makes him special, despite how often it conflicts with… well, everything. And the only thing he can think of is to lash out, sometimes with laser blasts.

Made with action figure stop-motion animation à la Robot Chicken (whose team also produced this), M.O.D.O.K. is a treat to watch, and the technique really makes the goofy situations and sudden violence work. It is much easier to take a boss with a giant head blowing an unlucky employee’s arm off if it sort of looks like a kid playing with toys.

Despite the huge stylistic and tonal change from the MCU, Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is able to tell a twistedly touching story about a supervillian who realizes that he isn’t so super anymore. And maybe he never was.

Jordan plays John Kelly, a Navy SEAL “badass,” as a buddy describes him, who we first meet on a covert operation in Syria with his unit, lead by Lt. Commander Greer (Jodie-Turner Smith). Unfortunately, what should have been a simple fight against your average terrorists becomes far deadlier than expected: nobody said anything about fighting Russians. A squad member is killed because of the faulty intel, and Kelly immediately suspects that the CIA member who accompanied them, the cold and quiet Agent Ritter (Jamie Bell), knew about the danger.

Greer tells Kelly to drop it. Back in the States, members of Kelly’s SEAL team begin to be murdered right outside their houses. Kelly is also attacked, but manages to fight off all but one assailant before slipping into a coma from his wounds. Unfortunately, he was not fast enough to save his pregnant wife (Lauren London). Kelly later learns that the assassins were Russian agents, but the US government will not pursue the missing one in order to avoid an international incident. Outraged, (with an emphasis on “rage”) Kelly begins to take matters into his own hands to find his wife’s killer.

Tom Clancy wrote tense, technically and politically detailed Cold War novels, which became successful films in the 90’s with The Hunt for Red October and Patriot Games, movies that emphasized procedure over prolonged action. Recently, Clancy is perhaps more known for video games bearing his name, like the highly-popular shooter Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. These games have a little of the tactical feel that made Clancy big, but have lately focused more on the immediate thrills of combat. Without Remorse is certainly a result of this shift.

Without Remorse has some amazing action set pieces that give you the “sexiness” of precise gunplay, but, like a Call of Duty game, the story itself becomes more of just a segue between the action. In Patriot Games, the audience is walked through every possible scenario and its potential consequences before paying off with satisfying action. Here, we get satisfying action with a brief explanation afterwards.

Jordan gives a great performance as a desperate man who is suddenly tangled up in politics that he must unravel, but I had trouble even appreciating the knots.

Just as Disney+’s Falcon and The Winter Soldier wraps up, star Anthony Mackie is also featured in another trending hit with the sci-fi thriller Synchronic, currently #7 on Netflix’s Top Ten list. However, while Marvel has a reputation for intricately weaving exciting and varied action within a tight narrative, Synchronic cannot compete in that department. Synchronic has a lot of great sequences and genuinely freaky visuals, but experience the that is built up to is never followed through on, leaving a lot of potential unrealized.

Steve (Mackie) and Dennis (Jamie Dornan) are two paramedics who roam the seedy streets of New Orleans. Despite thinking they have seen it all, the pair begin to find more and more bizarre injuries and bloody deaths, all tied to a new designer drug called “Synchronic:” a woman bitten by a rare snake, a guy stabbed with an alien-looking sword, and a woman burnt to a crisp with an old doorknob beside her. Things get much worse when Dennis learns that his daughter, Brianna (Ally Ioannides), has gone missing after using the drug. Steve finds the drug’s creator (Ramiz Monsef), who explains that it allows you to experience time in a nonlinear way, but is more potent than he realized. People are now getting lost in other time periods and never returning. Steve then takes it upon himself to learn everything he can about time travel and bring Brianna back.

Synchronic is torn between the trippiness of its subject matter and the human story around it. The friendship between Dennis and Steve is palpable, and we are given a lot of time with them as they joke and go about their grim profession. We know they need each other to stay sane. This attention to the character’s psychology manifests itself cinematically through a magnificent gliding long take: as the pair traverse a foggy nighttime street periodically drenched in yellow light, hiding bloody victims and tweaking addicts just off in the shadows. Even when their own ambulance follows them, it seems menacing. But they just talk women.

Yet once Steve starts experimenting with time, we learn all the secrets of Synchronic along with him. Suddenly the focus shifts from two friends confronting the unknown to a heavily explained time travel rescue.

Watching Mackie and Dornan buddy around is a great time. If only we got to go to work with them more.

Having developed a cult following on Adult Swim with The Eric Andre Show, a surrealist talk show with deeply uncomfortable celebrity in-terviews and weird street pranks, I was very eager to see where Andre’s mind would take a fea-ture film built entirely on shocking unsuspecting bystanders. What we get is a crisp 86 minute romp up the East coast that delivers on the shock value and doesn’t try to tell anything but a sim-ple, yet entertaining, story.Andre plays Chris, a manic, yet good-hearted guy, sick of working boring jobs around thesame boring city all his life. Bud (Lil Rel Howery), Chris’ childhood friend, doesn’t think much of their lives either, but has always been too chicken to do anything about it.

One day, Chris’ childhood crush Maria (Michaela Conlin) walks in to his work. She tells Chris about her art gallery in New York City and invites him to stop by if he is ever in town. Knowing that it has to be destiny, Chris convinces Bud to steal Trina’s bright pink car (she’s in prison again, anyway) and head outto meet the woman of his dreams. Little do they know, Trina has just broken out of prison and is not very happy about having her car stolen.

With a crazed con on the warpath and the love of Chris’ life waiting for him, the buddies must make it to NYC in one piece.As mentioned, the story is very simple, but it is not something we are expected to put much thought into. There are some staged moments between the characters, but they are little more than segues between the next prank. It works because the pranks are so memorable in the “I-can’t-believe-they-did-that” sort of way. There are not many movies where we can see some-body’s genuine reaction to what they think is a woman about to throw a guy off a roof, or a go-rilla brutalizing a clueless tourist. With a quick runtime and tons of inventive gags, Bad Trip is a journey worth taking.

Maybe a decade or so into the future, the Ukraine has been thrown into a bloody civil war, and a heavily robotized American military finds itself acting as peacekeeping forces. Lieutenant Harp (Damson Idris) is a drone pilot who gives air support to friendly ground forces, but when he takes his own initiative on a mission, he accidentally causes the death of two marines. As punishment, Harp is shipped to the war zone to get on-the-ground training, having been specifically selected, he learns, by the no-nonsense Captain Leo (Anthony Mackie). It turns out that Leo is actually a highly-advanced android, able to pass completely as a human. Leo wanted Harp because he can “think outside the box.” As the two venture on a covert mission into the war zone to retrieve stolen nuclear launch codes, it becomes clear that a bomb is not the only threat to world peace.

There’s some exciting shootouts and Anthony Mackie, as always, is more than capable in a military role. His two most famous roles are the amiable yet deeply exasperated Sergeant Sanborn in The Hurt Locker and the Air Force-trained superhero Falcon in the Avengers blockbusters. He is able to convey outstanding charisma suitable for a Marvel flick, yet also the weariness and authority necessary when a deeper role calls for it.

As talented of an actor Mackie is, however, I never truly bought that he is a machine deep down. I get that he was specifically designed to act exactly like a normal human, but I wished that there was some idiosyncrasy that Mackie would have been able to perform, to indicate that there was still a cold machine within him. He is set up as being some sort of savant, feared by most everyone on the base early on, but besides playing classical music and asking for strict silence while working, there was really nothing else odd about him. The script simply doesn’t give him anything unique.Outside The Wire feels more like it’s about a guy who has to listen to a chip in his head, rather than a guy whose entire brain is literally a chip.

I’m a sucker for movies about imagination. The Lego Movie and Pan’s Labyrinth are two great examples, both about kids’ anxieties coming to life as playful fantasies in reaction to authority figures exerting a bit too much control: the only way to navigate outward is to head inward. Dave Made a Maze takes this idea and swaps out the kids for thirty somethings and the “authority figures’ ‘ for an artist’s fear of failure. What results is a visually inventive movie with a poignant commentary on the struggles of creating something all your own.

The titular Dave (Nick Thune), we are told in an animated intro, has been struggling as an artist for some time now, always starting a project, losing interest, and moving on to something else. One day, Dave’s girlfriend Annie (Meera Rohit Kumbhani) returns from a weekend away to find a giant cardboard fort in their living room with Dave somehow trapped inside. Dave warns that he has built a labyrinth that has begun to magically grow beyond his control, but insists that he cannot just wreck it; he needs to complete it himself. Annie, with Dave’s friends Gordon (Adam Busch) and filmmaker Harry (James Urbaniak), who brings along a movie crew, the group braves a bizarre, fantastical labyrinth that is impossibly bigger on the inside and filled with deadly cardboard traps and monsters.

The sets are the best part of the movie, all made of cardboard with colorful and intricate designs making every new chamber of the maze unique. One room holds attacking cardboard birds, another may just be a hallway covered in playing cards, and another has a cardboard buzzsaw trap. It is refreshing to see a movie that commits itself to purposely cheap special effects, allowing the story to be enriched by the DIY nature of its world. It looks cheesy because the characters can’t believe how cheesy it is. Unfortunately, the performances don’t always work within the world, sometimes too goofy for the already wacky situations that the characters are in. Why chew such lovingly crafter scenery? 

But in all, Dave Made a Maze is a breezy 80 minute adventure about what happens when a personal creation takes on a life of its own, affecting those around the creator in ways unintended. It is never too heavy-handed, and the silliness never becomes too grating. It is what too many movies are not: fun.

The new Netflix movie The Midnight Sky, directed by and starring George Clooney, has an ideal premise for our times. A film about learning to care for others during an isolation period as the air outside becomes more and more unbreathable, you might say hits close to home as 2020 winds down.

In the year 2049, a mysterious disaster known only as The Event occurs in multiple places around the globe, slowly contaminating Earth and rendering human life impossible. Augustine (George Clooney), an old and bitter astronomer, has been living on an Arctic research base alone after the other personnel and their families evacuated. Augustine is slowly dying anyway, so he chooses to stay by himself and wait for The Event to take him. However, his plans for a lonely death are interrupted by both the discovery of Iris (Caoilinn Springall), a mute little girl forgotten in the chaotic evacuation, and the realization that the Aether, a spaceship returning home from Jupiter, is oblivious of the danger awaiting its crew (featuring Felicity Jones and David Oyelowo). As Augustine races further north to a communications station, he must keep himself alive in an Arctic hellscape long enough to save both the girl and the astronauts.

The scenes with Augustine and the girl are by far the most absorbing, at times feeling like scenes from the frightening father/son post-apocalypse film The Road. Clooney frequently lets the camera linger on the emptiness of Augustine’s formerly bustling compound and the vast wastes that surround it. His thick white beard and mournful eyes become landscapes in themselves, betraying the human compassion beneath an otherwise dead exterior.

Sadly, the Aether scenes simply cannot match the emotional weight and immediacy of Augustine’s quest. Aether’s interior is incredibly spacious and clearly designed for comfort, something that makes the possibility of being stranded in it much less existentially frightening to the audience. Besides a dangerous spacewalk, the crew is never exposed to the elements, and their immediate safety never truly seems jeopardized. 

The Midnight Sky is not at all a bad movie, it just bounces back and forth seemingly between two movies, one more compelling than the other. We can be relatively certain that the Aether will reach Earth eventually, but not that Augustine will contact them in time. The movie simply spends too much time on what is certain.
