H E R Brings the Heat With 2

Two highly successful EP’s, a guest slot on the first leg of Bryson Tiller’s tour, her very first
exclusive, sold out tour, new music video, and the ghostly wonder known as H.E.R. continues to
show no sign of pumping the brakes.
On Friday (Oct. 13), a tad bit after midnight the secret songstress took to Twitter to not only
announce the second part of her, “H.E.R., Vol. 2” project but also release her newest single from
the project, “2.”
“Pre-order #HERvol2 – The B Sides featuring 6 new songs NOW! Receive my new song “2”
instantly! October 20th,” tweeted the young rising sensation.

As the eerie production begins, “2” sounds like a trademark H.E.R song. However, the tune
instantly catches listeners off guard as the tempo increases, the base packs more of a wallop, and
the lyrics become a little more… explicit!
This is very new for H.E.R because the majority of her records possess a sensual slow flow that
focuses mainly on love and heartache. The production on “2” is quicker, more energized and
innovative. Regardless, it still contains the same H.E.R. that listeners and fans fell in love with
originally. The production still manages to remain true to her artistry as it delivers a very
hypnotic, intoxicating undertone that many are used to hearing when listening to her music.
Unlike many of the tracks H.E.R has put out within the past year, this song is literally not
speaking about being endlessly in love, happiness, or any bubbly feeling associated with the
thought of love. Instead the smooth-talking wonder is basically seeking revenge, she has been
played by someone whom she thought loved her and instead of being a damsel in distress, she
rescues herself from the pain and finds someone else. In other words, while her ex-lover may feel
he has played her, she has now switched the roles and become the player. DJ Hustle

“It’s cool. It’s really never been that deep. || Wasn’t thinking about you, cause’ you didn’t give a
f*** about me. || Thought I was up in my room, crying myself to sleep. I was with a better you,
while you were busy playing me!”
The chorus then echoes a pretty self-explanatory theme of while you think you were only playing
me, I was actually playing you… too.
The mischievous melody reveals another side of H.E.R that many may have never seen before.
She shows that she can be just a savage with the best of them. She uses the song to express,
“Hey, if you can have your cake and eat it too, then I most certainly will as well.” Many will
appreciate the tune for the realness and genuine lyricism that it possesses. The song is actually
extremely relatable and H.E.R. effortlessly makes it easy to love with her powerful yet polished
vocals.

In the last verse of the song, the singer cuts at her ex’s pride like a sharp blade as she proudly
proclaims, “Thought I wouldn’t find out, thought I didn’t know how to play the game. ||
Could’ve screamed at you for hours, instead I was screaming somebody else’s name.”
Through her lyrics, production, and shadowy delivery, the mysterious H.E.R persistently relays
this message that “2” can play the game and she has no problem engaging in such antics if the
need arises.
The record empowers anyone who has ever been played by someone whom they loved and tells
them to take the hurt and sadness that may initially infiltrate their hearts, release it and invest
their attention and time into someone else who actually wants it. Another job well done to the
mysterious persona!
