N.E.R.D & Rihanna Strike Gold with Lemon Single and Video
Pharrell’s N.E.R.D. group is back and in the best way possible! What great a way is it to return
then with… a fully engaged banger! Released Wednesday, on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show,
N.E.R.D shakes the foundation of the world with their scorching hot new single AND video,
“Lemon!” The single marks the group’s first official record since their fourth studio album,
Nothing, released in 2010.
The record is literally insane. An innocent sounding Pharrell begins, “The truth will set you free,
but first it’ll piss you off,” before the sick production begins. Upbeat, Raw, and completely in
your face, Pharrell goes off in the song!
“Hate! Bad b***** wanna be my bae
Hate! Hunt me down like the C.I.A
Hate! Side of my car, tryna see my face
Hate! Want me to beat it like the T.I. case
Oh (hate!) and if it heated I’ma feed my face”
Pharrell is no stranger to speaking exactly what is on his mind through his music, and he uses the
record to somewhat humorously shade the 45 th President and his ridiculous actions, and also
bring attention to our current political state.
“Hate! You keep asking me where Im from
Hate! About the borders and, Did I run?
Hate! Keep askin how I feel bout guns
Hate! Theres a light and dark army, which side you choose? Oh
Hate! If not now then when?
Hate! And if not me then who?
Hate! Don’t drink the Kool-Aid, my friends
Hate! I tried to tell yall about this dude,” Pharrell yells. DJ Hustle
While it may have been some time since the group has made music, they show no signs of
slowing down with this track. The sequencing, loops, and sample come together and create this
outstanding production that has listeners simply ready to get up and dance from its beginning.
Skateboard P comes through with the charisma, swagger and delivery in only a way that he can
before Rihanna shocks the universe yet again. As the beat switches and gives listeners a flat out
futuristic, hypnotic hip-hop vibe, Rihanna steps on everyone’s neck with her verse.
Rih slays her entire feature as she comes through with a straight bada** vibe that simply cannot
be matched. The Barbados Babe literally raps full force for entire part on the song. Bad Gal RiRi
brings the bars, the energy, sexiness, and cockiness that makes listeners literally crave more.
RiRi talks that talk as she proudly raps,
“I get it how I live it I live it how I get
Count the mothaf**in & digits / I pull up with a lemon, not & cause she ain’t livin’ It’s just your
eyes get acidic /And this here ain’t a scrimmage / Mothaf**ka, we ain’t finished.”
The record is truly delivers a cocky aesthetic. Listeners that play the tune will instantly start
feeling themselves and want to stunt. Not only does, Lemon deliver a message, and displays
much symbolism but it does it while maintaining flavor and style. The track stays true to the
N.E.R.D style and also unleashes a completely unseen side of Rihanna that everyone will love
and appreciate. The video follows as it does not disappoint either!
Welcome back N.E.R.D.! You have most certainly been missed.
