Kamala Harris on her way to become Vice President

Howard alumna, member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, United States senator
and most importantly; a black woman; Kamala Harris, is in line to become Vice President of the
United States of America. Something never seen or done before. History.
On Wednesday, Joe Biden announced his running mate for vice president; Kamala Harris.

To some this was a complete shock and to others this was no surprise.
Thursday, Harris gave her first speech as vice president nominee. She said some of the
following:

“The President’s mismanagement of the pandemic has plunged us into the worst economic crisis
since the Great Depression, and we’re experiencing a moral reckoning with racism and systemic
injustice that has brought a new coalition of conscience to the streets of our country demanding
change,” Harris explained at the afternoon event in Wilmington, Delaware.
“America is crying out for leadership. Yet we have a President who cares more about himself
than the people who elected him,” said Harris. “As someone who has presented my fair share of
arguments in court, the case against Donald Trump and Mike Pence is open and shut.”

It was a first performance that showcased why Harris is the perfect match to be alongside Biden
in his journey to become president; in her defense.
Harris is not alone. She has the support of many people who are her color, and those who are not
her color as well. It is more than just being the vice president of the United States, it’s about the
change that comes with it.

Black and brown women and girls are looked down upon from the start of their lives. The world
puts them in a position to make it seem like they are unable to be as successful as the white
woman. The world portrays white women in major roles, but never women of color.

A black woman, let alone a woman in general, has never been in any office position in the White
House; and for one to even get this close to the opportunity is a big deal.
Biden, too, did not let the symbolic essence of his choice go overlooked at their first appearance
together. When Harris stared at, now squarely in the position of a supporting player, Biden had

pictured the reaction of “little Black and brown girls, who so often feel overlooked and
undervalued in their communities.”
This is bigger than a presidential title. It is history in the making, we are all living through a
history book chapter as we speak. As a black woman, this gives us a voice, a chance to gain our
power back, a chance to give us a platform and a chance to give the little black a brown girls
