1) Crisco Kidd , please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?

First off, thank you HustleTV for the invite to be a part of what you’re doing! I’ve seen your hustle for years and it’s an inspiration for those who are looking for a way to break through the noise and never let excuses stop you.

As for me and my career, it’s been a non-stop ride since DJaying and promoting parties in high school and landing my first radio gig as a Freshman in college. Currently, I’m based in Phoenix and heard weekday afternoons on Power 98.3fm and weekends on SiriusXM – Pitbull’s Globalization.

Since 2000, I’ve lived in and done radio in Houston, Albuquerque, LA (Oxnard/Ventura/I.E.), Dallas, and now Phoenix. Each city, program director, team and friends, playing their part in my personal and professional journey. I’ve worked with countless artists, producers, and talent over the years and been a part of creating a few key eras in Hip-Hop but, it’s the listeners/people who I’ve met along the way who have impacted my life and career the most.

2) You’re running for mayor, how did this come about?

I didn’t plan to enter the political arena, I had left that to my brother who leads a successful law firm in Houston, TX. I’ve always felt I would be better as a voice for the people who didn’t have the platform that I’ve been blessed with for 20 years. And, really, it’s ALWAYS been about community service in my career over the recognition. Well, things change.

There are a few factors that finally pushed me into running for office but, the final straw was after the death of George Floyd, in addition to Mayor Kate Gallego’s lack of communication with communities and people of color regarding COVID-19, I decided IT’S TIME Phoenix has a mayor that talks to EVERYBODY. Not just national TV or talk radio, a mayor for all Phoenicians.

Most politicians come from money, take millions of dollars in campaign funding, and are only seen for photo ops during campaign season or PR events. Well, I’m an Independent who refuses to play party politics and the hyper-partisan game. I’ve never depended on special interests and have been a part of public service/community relations my whole life. IT’S TIME we have someone who is and has been a part of the people.

3) Who has played a meaningful role in your life?

There are a few key people who come to mind professionally but, to risk leaving anyone out, I’ll just say THANK YOU to the ones who believed in me and encourage me to be successful without compromising my integrity and brand. I’ve never had to brown-nose or change to please anyone. That could be good or bad.

First is my creator above and then, my parents, who are both retired educators. My mom is still the strongest woman I know and is to thank (or blame lol) for my drive and never stop or settle attitude and my dad for the natural talent to do what I do. Also, my girl, Brenda, and my two-year-old son Phoenix have given me motivation and meaning that’s rare to find and it’s the new driving force to be great.

4) How has Covid -19 changed the way you do things?

COVID-19 hasn’t stopped me from doing one thing in radio. While other personalities have been submitting their voice or tracking from home, we’ve been essential workers since March. Our Program Director (DJ Complex) gave us the option and we all felt it was important to be as plugged into our city as possible, staying live and local.

Unfortunately, though, I had to close the doors on my restaurant, Famous Churros, after just seven months of being open. We were denied PPP assistance and received nothing from the city – another reason I am running for mayor. We are going back to the food truck business model and should be back running in a few months.

As for real estate, the market is still strong here locally and I currently have two clients selling three properties.

I refuse to let COVID-19 stop me.

5) If you could go back what would you change about yourself?

I think there a few decisions that everyone would go back and change, that’s part of life. All we can do is learn, not make those same mistakes again and choose to square up and be better. The mistakes and the losses are what make us who we are. As a DJ and radio personality, I’ve gotten to travel the world, been on TV in magazines, meet and talk to people from almost every background imaginable, make a solid and honest living, and gotten anything that I have truly wanted or what I was supposed to have. I’m afraid if I would have changed any of that, something that I have now may not exist.

6) What advice would give a young person?

BE HUMBLE. BE KIND. Work smarter, not harder but, never be afraid to work hard. Never give up. Never settle. Most importantly, “Do it right, do it light. Do it wrong, do it long.” – Pops
