NBA Players Force Postponement of Games
Written by Andrew Goldberg
In a late-breaking development on Wednesday afternoon, the National Basketball Association has elected to postpone the three playoff games scheduled for Wednesday after the Milwaukee Bucks refused to come onto the court for their scheduled game against the Orlando Magic. The players decision comes on the heels of Jacob Blake’s murder in Kenosha, Wisconsin three days ago, when police officers shot the unarmed Blake seven times after detaining him.
After the Bucks players refused to take the court, news quickly broke of other team’s players doing the same. Members of the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors, who had previously discussed postponing the start of their playoff series, quickly followed suit, as well as members of the Los Angeles Lakers, Portland Trail Blazers, Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver soon made the announcement that all three games on Wednesday would be postponed.
As first reported by ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the remaining players inside Orlando’s NBA Bubble are set to meet tonight to discuss the next steps of their movement, with a real possibility of a league shutdown.
A formal decision on the matter may take days to decide, though many players have already taken to social media to voice their displeasure with Blake’s treatment and are demanding justice. Lakers star LeBron James posted on Twitter, “F—THIS MAN!!!! WE DEMAND CHANGE. SICK OF IT”, while many other players have lauded the Bucks for their decision.
Players have been unified in their commitment to social justice since the restart, with many players displaying messages on the backs of their jerseys and the message “Black Lives Matter” being spelled out on the court of each game. Still, the more recent events in Wisconsin have caused players to reevaluate their strategy going forward, with certain players looking to do more.
With Major League Baseball’s Milwaukee Brewers electing to postpone their game on Wednesday as well, many are now waiting to see how far-reaching the Bucks decision will be. We will continue to provide updates on this story as it develops.
