I can’t think of a better line to introduce newcomers to Lute than “My daughter called me crying said she miss me so I just cry with her/ Some days I get caught up in the mix but I’m still a real n***a.” The tone setting line is the first heard on Lute’s newest single “Life.” On “Life” Lute takes an introspective approach, spitting game by reflecting on his own thoughts and experiences. There’s a beauty in Lute’s delivery that makes you feel every word. It’s one thing to rap well. It’s another to have an impact with your expression.

The sentimental bassline on the Dho produced track pulls at your heartstrings as the whimsical violin carefully caresses Lute’s cadence. This track really made me feel something. At the very least, listeners can relate to Lute’s words and know they’re not alone in their struggles.

Lute details storytime with his daughter telling her about growing up in the trenches and you can sense a light in his words. Lute expresses his gratitude for making strides as a musician but still recognizes that hard times won’t go away. You also get the sense that Lute is still very connected to his fans and the people in his community. A true man of the people.

His delivery exudes confidence without coming off as braggadocious. The genuine confidence is felt through honesty and self expression. “Life” is wisdom inspired by success. Lute takes responsibility for his thoughts and actions, stating “If I fuck up then I own it.” Whether it’s good or bad, he takes ownership of who he is and leaves space for growth.

“Life” doesn’t try too hard to send a message to listeners. Through authentic humility, the message manifests on its own. Lute is an impeccable emcee making even better music. There’s no word of a project release date, but let’s hope we get more where “Life” came from. It’s been a few years since the Charlotte emcee dropped a full length solo album. His latest single puts the “quality over quantity” notion into perspective and makes it a little easier to wait patiently for what’s next. In a musical climate in which newer hip hop artists tend to flood the market, Lute is taking his time. Both with the music and in life.
Favorite Line: “I’m just a little overwhelmed my mom can hear it in my lyrics”
