Written By Zaina Cummins
DaBaby’s hit single Rockstar, featuring Roddy Ricch, has reached No.1 on Billboard‘s 2020 Songs of the Summer chart.
The 20-position Songs of the Summer running tally tracks the most popular titles based on: cumulative performance on the weekly streaming, airplay and sales-based Billboard Hot 100 chart from Memorial Day through Labor Day (this year encompassing charts dated June 6 through Sept. 12).
DaBaby has been known to have the same flow on all of his songs before his release of Rockstar.
Fans were always complaining how his beats were the same, how he in their words, “wouldn’t let the track breath.” After much criticism, DaBaby took note and switched up his flow. The end result of that was his single Rockstar featuring Los Angeles’s finest, Roddy Ricch.
Rockstar has led the weekly Hot 100 for seven weeks, this week placing at No. 4.
It is amazing how an experiment can turn into a success. His fans and peers were in complete and utter shock when he released this single. Some were for it and some were not because it was out of his expertise, but the example set was; you can’t please them all.
Despite the negative feedback, his single still did numbers and became his personal best since the start of his career. This song has now become a TikTok favorite and is played at family gatherings and possess longevity; which is the goal in the music industry.
According to Billboard,, Rockstar ruled for 13 of this year’s 15 Songs of the Summer tracking weeks, having taken over at No. 1 on the chart dated June 20, after Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande’s “Rain on Me” led the first list and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage,” featuring Beyoncé, topped the second tally.
Attached to his No. 1 Billboard position, is being No. 3 in Jack Harlow’s What’s Poppin, featuring him (DaBaby), Tory Lanez and Lil Wayne. This song has also became a TikTok favortie and popularized the song within hours.
Notably, with DaBaby at No. 1 with Rockstar and No. 3 with Whats Poppin, he’s the first artist to boast two titles in the top three on a season-ending Songs of the Summer chart since Cardi B just two years ago. In 2018, she held Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, with her own I Like It, with Bad Bunny and J Balvin, and as featured on Maroon 5’s Girls Like You.
DaBaby is making a statement which is that he too can be versatile. He is willing to give the fans what they want so in return he can get what he wants; gratitude and success.
The Charlotte, North Carolina rapper is just getting started.
