Marvel Returns with Elizabeth Olsen’s WandaVision Streaming on Disney+

Written By Matthew Sadowski

The first two episodes of Marvel’s WandaVision are now available, marking the first major MCU property to come out since the pandemic threw their tightly planned schedule off-course. Although audiences will have to wait until this May for the MCU’s feature film Black Widow, WandaVision instead continues the story of Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff (aka The Scarlet Witch). Costarring is Paul Bettany, a personal favorite actor of mine, as Wanda’s lover, the android Vision.

We find Wanda and Vision inside a sitcom from the 50’s and 60’s; everything is black and white, it’s shot on a painfully obvious soundstage, presented in the old TV square aspect ratio, has canned laughter that is generally a bit too rapturous for any given gag, and everyone talks like… well, it was the 50’s. Wanda and Vision have no memory, or even idea that things are not as they should be, carrying on as if they simply just moved into town and the Infinity War never happened. So far, it is not unlike Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie in that our couple has magic powers and desperately try to act like normal All-American suburbanites while keeping their abilities a secret. This, of course, leads to wacky hijinks.

I enjoy Marvel movies, but I do lose interest quickly in the formulaic approach to most of their superhero stories. This is why I am impressed with WandaVision; it really does go all in on the sitcom presentation. There are big hints that something is wrong (I’m guessing the evil Hydra has something to do with it) but other than that it really just is a lot of silly jokes you’d find in any sitcom. Besides trying to hide their powers, there’s not any other superhero stuff in it, just folks trying to impress the boss and win the talent show.

As mentioned, it’s clear that some evil plot is brewing just beneath the facade and that our heroes probably aren’t in TV land by choice. But for now, it’s a fascinating experiment that Marvel is exhibiting, probably the last thing anyone would expect from the franchise that put out the biggest movie of all time.
