2021 NAACP Image Awards

The 2021 52nd NAACP Image Awards took place Saturday night, honoring people of color working in the music, film, television and literature fields.
Founded in 1909 in response to the ongoing violence against Black people around the country, the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) is the largest and most pre-eminent civil rights organization in the nation. NAACP has over 2,200 units and branches across the nation, along with well over 2M activists. Their mission is to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons.
Among the winners were late actor Chadwick Boseman, who received two posthumous awards for his roles in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Da 5 Bloods,” and Viola Davis, who picked up two awards for her roles in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “How to Get Away With Murder.” Actor Anthony Anderson, who returned to host the ceremony for the eighth time, received an award for his role in “Black-ish.”
In 1942, NAACP Executive Director, Walter White, worked with politicians and studio executives to establish an ad hoc committee with the major studios to monitor the image and portrayal of African Americans on the screen.
In 1967, the NAACP Hollywood Branch created the NAACP Image Awards. Now a primetime live special, the NAACP Image Awards is the nation’s premier event celebrating the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts, as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors. Despite the many rewards given out, everyone brought their A game to the NAACP Image Awards. Although the ongoing coronavirus pandemic prevented many stars from being there in person, celebrities like Regina King and Michelle Obama still tuned in to the awards show from home and showed off their glamorous looks on camera.
