Dr Dre And Jimmy Iovine To Open Up A High School In Los Angeles

I don’t know if you have ever heard of Jimmy Iovine or Dr. Dre, but they’re the co-founders of Beats By Dre and their product line has been one of the top-grossing electronics on Amazon. Now their success has led them to other places, like the public school system.

Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre may be founders of one of the most successful headphone companies in the world, but their latest venture is a whole different kind of industry. The two music moguls have just announced that they’re teaming up to open a school for students on the West Side of Los Angeles.

Up until recently, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) had a reputation for not exactly being the most supportive of the arts. In most schools, art was treated as a nice-to-have and not an actual must when it came to educational funding. Seems that this was the motivation for change for Iovine and Dr. Dre.

Despite Los Angeles being a city with an entertainment industry that generates billions of dollars in revenue each year, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has a reputation for neglecting the arts.

Over the past few years, school districts in the US have been cutting arts education funding, and LAUSD is no different. Though schools in Los Angeles are bursting at the seams with student populations growing larger each year, funding has not increased.

After major success in the music industry, Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre will be creating a new school and program in California set to begin as soon as fall 2022. They wanted to highlight that this is not just a music school, but that it will be more inclined to the arts.

Believe it or not, Dr. Dre and Iovine already have their plan approved by The L.A. Board of Education. They also have already been part of the educational system in the past, in fact, did you know that this college called “The Academy,” existed?

It’s on a hill in the middle of nowhere, about 40 minutes west of Los Angeles, in the City of Industry, with a view of the Inland Empire and the San Gabriel Mountains. The already existing college is the University of Southern California Los Angeles’ Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy.

The Academy’s website states that the school offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. This successful venture might be the reason why Dr. Dre and Iovine are setting their sights on public education.

The future high school is yet to be named, but for now, is labeled as “Regional High School No. 1”

It is worth noting that the school will be fairly small. Sources say that it will begin with only teaching 124 students, with the later goal of 250 students.

If the goal is to bring arts and culture to the L.A. public school system, Lovine and Dr. Dre might have set their goalpost a little low. Los Angeles has nearly 4 million occupants, with 800,000 of them being teenagers.

There is little information about how the school plans on being funded.
