The day after Laker ‘s hero, Kobe Bryant; aka ‘Bean,’ aka ‘The Black Mamba,’ was honored on his 42nd birthday, the City of Los Angeles and Orange County celebrated his name with a day in his memory on Monday—8/24, which were the two uniform numbers he wore throughout his 20-year NBA career.
The city of Los Angeles declared 8/24 Kobe Bryant Day in 2016, shortly after his final season with the Lakers. The Board of Supervisors in Orange County followed suit earlier this month.
Bryant, who won the Lakers five NBA championships and also finished as the fourth-leading scorer in NBA history, died in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26 along with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven others while traveling to a youth basketball game in Ventura County.
Many friends, fans and family remembered Bryant on Sunday in a variety of ways — by his wife, Vanessa, in an Instagram post; Lakers stars in exclusive interviews; the Dodgers in a video tribute and by wearing his jerseys before their game; and by Candace Parker and the Sparks just to name a few.
It seems that Kobe has been gone for so long when in reality, it has only been a couple months. Him and his daughter’s deaths occurring at the beginning of the year shattered everyone.
One thing about Bryant is that he was known all over the world. He was respected. Anytime one spoke of Kobe it was and still is always of high standard. He left the world so unexpectedly. The world was mourning. Although he retired long before his passing, it is agreed that basketball will never be the same without his existence.
L.A. City Council member Herb Wesson announced Monday on his Twitter account that a portion of Figueroa Street will be named after Kobe Bryant.
His tweet read, “Figueroa St. will soon be Kobe Bryant Blvd. between Olympic & MLK. Kobe’s legacy is bigger than basketball. #KobeBryantBlvd will be a reminder to everyone, young and old who drive down it, there is no obstacle too big and that with the #MambaMentality , anything is possible.”
The Lakers and the rest of the world will continue to mourn the death of the two beautiful souls lost; along with the other innocent lives in the helicopter. Kobe and Gianna will never be forgotten and his wife, Vanessa Bryant, will make sure of that. HustleTV we love you Kobe.
