An Unlikely Win on Disclosures New Album ENERGY

Written By Maia L Kuspa

Disclosure is back at it again with a third album, ENERGY. Five years since their last full-length album, the British deep house duo has released a more refined, matured, and sophisticated album than anything before. Every track on the album brings, for lack of a better word, ENERGY, to the forefront of the listeners focus. Disclosure burst onto the scene by utilizing jungle house beats supported by talented vocalists like London Grammar and Sam Smith, and managed to sustain success with a sophomore album featuring acts like The Weeknd, Lorde, and many more. This third album does not disappoint featuring large acts such as Kelis and Common but it is “Lavender”, the song tapping Compton based rapper Channel Tres, which showcases something truly special that Disclosure has managed to do.

Some things to note: First, it is not easy to take a US based rapper and seamlessly integrate his/her unique flow into a deep house song. Second, it is not easy to collaborate lyrically with a US based rapper and deep house DJs. But “Lavender” offers us just that. At first listen, “Lavender” could be dismissed, but it’s the build up to Channel Tres’ main verse through repetitive and syrupy grooving lines that creates a vibe of true artistry and flow between DJ and rapper. Channel Tres puts it best with “Y’all ain’t never had a Compton n***** on this type of shit before huh?” And this acknowledgment of the uniqueness of the collaboration is exactly what excites us most about “Lavender”.

Would it have been possible when Disclosure was a fledgling group to accomplish this? Definitely not. Is ENERGYthe perfect chance for them to debut their talent of genre integration on a new level? YES. Even if British house music isn’t your cup of tea, this partnership with a rapper on the cusp of immense fame is an easy no-brainer listen. Give it a chance and you are going to enjoy this energetic track.

With “Lavender”, Channel Tres and Disclosure put it best: “Je suis le meilleur”.
