Detroits Finest Big Sean Drops Long And Anticipated Album Detroit 2
Written By Zaina Cummins
On Thursday, Big Sean released his fifth album, Detroit 2; a sequel to Sean’s critically acclaimed 2012 mixtape.
Sean has constructed a shrine to natural healing, traditional medicine, and faith for a total of 71 minutes. There are bars about Dr. Sebi, Sean’s open third eye, and even a single anti-vaxxer thread. On “Lucky Me,” Sean devotes a quarter of his verse to disclosing that he had a heart attack at the age of 19, which he claims was cured by taking magnesium from a natural doctor, concluding with lyrics: “That’s how I know that Western medicine weak.”
There is a definite contrast on Detroit 2, as Big Sean attempts to reconcile his new positive beliefs with the dark feelings and memories of his experience. “Wow, I don’t believe I was worried of suicide in me / Until life shows me all these different aspects at me,” he raps on “Deep Reverence.”
Throughout the album, Sean offers a brief snapshot at the numerous tragedies and diseases that never last. There are mentions of anxiety, a miscarriage with a partner, and deceased family members, but as soon as they arrive, they dissipate, as if spending more than one or two bars on these life-altering events would give the audience too much information.
Sean has been well respected in the music industry for almost a decade. He has set trends and put on for his hometown, Detroit, Michigan.
The most beautiful part about his new project is that he gets well known rappers from Detroit, as well as rappers on the rise; he mixes a little bit of old school with the new school.
It’s easy to get lost in the features on the album from interludes by Dave Chappelle, Erykah Badu and Stevie Wonder to verses by Nipsey Hussle, Post Malone and Travis Scott. But Detroit 2 thrives when Sean recognizes his city’s continuous talent through numerous generations. He gets Eminem and Sada Baby on the same track; that’s the old school mixed with the new school.
Eminiem has been around for decades while Sada Baby started rising to the top in 2018 with his single “Bloxk Party.”
Detroit 2 is a polarizing and polarized text. It contains a long list of forces that unmoored Sean (social media, mental illness, money, trappings of celebrity) and an even longer list of things that
helped him (Eastern medicine, meditation, a committed relationship, spirituality). As vulnerable as the album seems on the surface, it’s ultimately a guarded work.
