Thomas Heck Hustler of The week
1) Thomas Heck , please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Through years of hard work and perseverance, I have managed to sustain a viable business that is in high demand.I started DJing back in my teen years with my brothers. We were known as “The Party Savers” because whenever we would go out to parties and the music or current DJ wasn’t good, we would take over and save the party. As I got older, I started doing weddings and house parties.
Growing up in Philadelphia, we were always around music. This helped to develop a love and knowledge of songs, artists, and genre recognition. A very crucial skill for all DJs to have. Having that ear and familiarity with music helps with which records blend or mix with other records. After that, I spent a lot of time hanging out with other DJs at different clubs. Over time I developed different skill sets that would help me improve as a DJ.
2) How has being a DJ worked out for you?
DJing is not a new thing for me. I have been DJing for over 3 decades. It wasn’t until recently that I decided to shift my focus on primarily DJing and it has been extremely successful and profitable. To date, DJing has been great. It allows me to do what I love the most which is playing music and making people happy.
When people leave the party and express how much fun they had or the host is praising you for doing a good job and making their event memorable, there is nothing like that. Sometimes it isn’t even about the praise. Seeing the faces of partygoers, when they are dancing up a sweat and having a good time, that when you know you’re killing it. They are enjoying themselves. You’ll be asked back again for the next event.
3) How has Covid-19 changed your life?
Since the outbreak, it has definitely affected business. Many events that were available before have been forced to close and that has decreased the volume of business for all DJ’s. All you can do is practice, practice, practice and keep your skills tight and continue to expand your craft. Like most successful DJs, I have also expanded into music production. Once they have developed a vaccine and businesses are allowed to reopen, things will return back to normal.
4)Who has played a meaningful role in your life?
I have a wide variety of individuals who play a major part in my life. From family to friends to business partners to co-workers. Each one has helped me build my business, establish a stable source of income, and kept me grounded. My biggest influences are my parents. They were the first ones to help me develop the love of music by exposing me to different genres growing up. Second, the sister and brothers for helping and encouraging me to break out of my shell and show off my DJ skills each time we stepped into a weak party.
Third, my friends and business partners for hiring and working with me on various projects and events. Opening up doors and expanding my business with their knowledge, expertise, and connections. No one can do it alone.
